Raising a Reader – San Francisco, Alameda & Contra Costa Counties
Raising A Reader targets early literacy by giving red bags of books to young children before they enter school. Kids get bags at their pre-school or library, and bring them home each week. Families read the books together. Program provides support to educators and integrates with their existing programs. Also provides workshops to parents in multiple languages focused on concerns of many low-income parents about their own literacy. In San Francisco, Raising A Reader has established partnerships and book rotations in 394 classrooms. In Alameda County, they collaborate with 225 classrooms in early-childhood programs that serve low-income populations in Oakland, Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Berkeley, Livermore and Emeryville. They are amazing!
Tell us about the piece you are nominating:
I am nominating a letter that I received at the end of the year, thanking me for a donation earlier in the year, and telling me about what my donation supported. There were two wonderful, compelling stories about kids that the program had made such a difference for, including how the program helped a woman who was deaf to sign the books to her child, and how the books had supported parent-child bonds around reading and excitement about reading.
Why do you think they are deserving of a Bloomie?
Great balance of stories along with details of how many families my gift and others’ gifts had supported. Really brought home the importance of this work, and made me want to give to this organization again!
Our judges loved the handwritten note(s) on the letter and the whole piece passes the You Test with flying colors. It also specifically acknowledged the first gift, which is so critical in retaining a donor long-term. Nice job!
