The Bloomies are our award for outstanding donor communications in the nonprofit sector. Periodically, we’ll feature a newsletter, email, direct mail piece, acknowledgement, solicitation or social media post that caught our eye.

Tell us about the fundraiser and/or organization you are nominating:

Max Goldenberg, Indy Reads

Indy Reads is a not-for-profit organization that relies on volunteers to provide basic literacy tutoring to illiterate and semi-literate adults. Their mission is to promote and improve the literacy of adults and families in Central Indiana. They believe that everyone should have an opportunity to learn to read, and their goal is to make Indianapolis 100% literate. Their programs include one-on-one tutoring, small group sessions, English Language Learner instruction, and “Literacy Labs” at neighborhood centers.

Tell us about the piece you are nominating:

I’m nominating a group of pieces mailed to my fiance and I after we made a first-time donation to the organization.

Within the mailing, we received a handwritten postcard from Max Goldenberg thanking us for meeting with him and our interest in getting involved, a hand-signed letter (with a handwritten note) from the CEO that described the impact of our donation, and two Indy Reads bookmarks for each of us designed with great branding and thought-provoking literacy stats.

Why do you think they are deserving of a Bloomie?

As a first-time donor to this organization, I was blown away with the acknowledgement and stewardship we received. My fiance and I both agreed before we made the donation that if we were thanked and stewarded well we would become annual donors to this organization. What could have been a one-time donation made out to the guests of our wedding, has become a relationship where we plan to give every year on our anniversary, and get involved with events and volunteering. My fiance and I are both marketers, and we’ve expressed our interest in giving back to the organization with some of our talents and services.

Indy Reads took great care to personalize the pieces that were sent, and that meant a lot to us. Plus, no thasks (thanking with an ask) included! We’re excited to get involved with them, and it’s in thanks to the great conversation we had with Max, and the amazing follow-up and acknowledgements we received.

Kristen Salmon is a Product Manager at Bloomerang. Kristen holds a Master of Public Affairs degree with concentrations in Nonprofit Management and Policy Analysis from Indiana University Bloomington and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Oklahoma State University. She also worked for two years as a Research Assistant in grad school on the multi-year Indiana Nonprofits: Scope and Community Dimensions project.
