The Bloomies are our award for outstanding donor communications in the nonprofit sector. Each week, we’ll feature a newsletter, email, direct mail piece, acknowledgement, solicitation or social media post that caught our eye.

Nominated by: Pamela Grow, Simple Development Systems

Tell us about the fundraiser and/or organization you are nominating: Kathleen Kennedy, Program and Development Coordinator at the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection

Tell us about the piece you are nominating:

This piece is the spring direct mail appeal from the Coalition. They created an integrated campaign with their followup email series as well.

Why do you think they are deserving of a Bloomie?

There were a number of things I liked about this appeal:

  • Real, warm, personal; there’s a genuine sense, reading this letter, that I’m a valued partner and a true insider
  • The donor love is palpable (check out the fabulous staff notes!)
  • Terrific PS stressing urgency – and why

Kathleen had this to say about the campaign:

“This campaign featured a $15,000 1:1 matching gift from one of our major donors (our goal was to raise $30,000 total) and focused on our work helping to pass a bond package in the coming November election that includes new funding for protecting natural open space in our area. Our campaign was really successful – we ended up raising $30,861!“
