The Bloomies are our award for outstanding donor communications in the nonprofit sector. Each week, we’ll feature a newsletter, email, direct mail piece, acknowledgement, solicitation or social media post that caught our eye.

Tell us about the fundraiser and/or organization you are nominating: CICOA

CICOA Aging & In-Home Solutions is a nonprofit organization providing the innovative answers, services and support you need to help your loved one remain at home in better health, with better care, at a lower cost. As a state-designated Area Agency on Aging serving Central Indiana, one call to CICOA links people with a wide range of services for older adults, people with disabilities and family caregivers.

Tell us about the piece you are nominating:

A monthly gift acknowledgement / cultivation note with a holiday theme:

Why do you think they are deserving of a Bloomie?

Acknowledging monthly gifts is tricky. It can be odd (and overwhelming) to send a thank you letter every month, especially if each individual payment is small. But those monthly donations do add up, and you should make sustaining donors feel extra special. After all, their retention rates can easily reach the 90th percentile.

I like this piece because it’s unexpected. It’s not tied to a specific gift (the amount is withdrawn around the 20th of the month, and this arrived around the 30th after four gifts or so).

It’s also seasonally clever. You can see that it has an Independence Day theme.

My family has lived in Indianapolis for almost 10 years, and CICOA is the only organization that we have supported for virtually that entire time. They understand donor stewardship and it shows. I occasionally get voicemails from their ED and volunteers thanking my family for its continued support – again, not tied to a specific gift or action – just an out-of-the-blue gesture that really means a lot.
