The Bloomies are our award for outstanding donor communications in the nonprofit sector. Each week, we’ll feature a newsletter, email, direct mail piece, acknowledgement, solicitation or social media post that caught our eye.

Tell us about the fundraiser and/or organization you are nominating:

Mary Spangler, Endowment & Major Gifts Officer – Bishop Ward High School

BWHS is a private, coed, Roman Catholic college preparatory high school in Kansas City, Kansas, established in 1908.

Tell us about the piece you are nominating:

This is a recent brochure for an endowment campaign that includes an inserted list of current members and funds.

The whole piece masterfully weaves in stories from graduates as recent as last year to as far back as the 1960s, with graduation dates next to the names. This “social proof” subtly adds impact.

Why do you think they are deserving of a Bloomie?

Bishop Ward High School got the social proof exactly right. The inside spread has two stories of actual bequest-makers. Real people, not rich people.

Plus, the brochure shows the results in the best, most gracious way: a Bishop Ward graduate saying thanks for the scholarship.

The bow around this package is the dead-on nostalgic cover, showing then and now (the age of prime prospects will be age 55 and above).

The feeling is perfect.
