The Bloomies are our award for outstanding donor communications in the nonprofit sector. Each week, we’ll feature a newsletter, email, direct mail piece, acknowledgement, solicitation or social media post that caught our eye.

Berkshire Natural Resources Council is a non-profit land conservation organization working throughout the Berkshires in Massachusetts to preserve threatened lands. The Council places special emphasis on protecting Berkshire’s farms, forests, streams, and ridgelines – the great landscape features that give us clean water, fresh air, local produce, healthy wildlife, and outstanding recreational opportunities.
Tell us about the piece you are nominating:

Why do you think they are deserving of a Bloomie?
It’s brilliantly on target all the way through. Look at the sales copy on the reply device. Look at the timely photo on the envelope of a blooming wild orchid. The communications of this small organization in the hills of western MA is beating the pants off much bigger charities. The only other people who work at this level I know are terrific agencies like Agents of Good.
Of course, no surprise to me: the editor, Tad Ames, spent years as a newspaperman and is a Yale graduate. He got donor-centricity about as fast as I could get it out of my mouth. And he writes like an angel.
The wooded Berkshire hillsides whisper BNRC’s praises, as do the wildlife thriving there, as do the human eyes that soak up its beauty, as do the natives and the rich vacationers and retirees and the farmers and the chambers of commerce and the enlightened realtors and the resident attractions like the Norman Rockwell Museum who know that BNRC’s vision … of an uninterrupted trail system that crosses hundreds of Berkshire miles and ridges … will forever protect the natural look and feel and health of this special place.
